It is overrated. But it is also good.

Berserk is shit. It has no redeeming qualities after volume 15 or so. LotGH is ok, but it's very shallow as evident by the extreme low quality of its threads.

It is not trash but it IS heavily overrated by a group of delusional fanboys that plague Any Forums among other parts of the internet. Thankfully here we also have people that know and appreciate Yamato, Ideon and other Sci-Fi anime with actual heart and directing skill behind them.

It's a decent space opera with good characters and large scope. It's hardly a masterpiece, and contains almost none of the political commentary its fans claim it does.

There's no real politics in the show at all. It's almost entirely military. Reinhard deposes the emperor and the bad nobles, and becomes a good emperor. Trunicht is a bad politician and gets elected thanks to Terrarist brownshirts. Phezan plots deviously.

There's talent in the staff but it isn't put to good use. Directing is incredibly stiff, a slave to the book's descriptions. Osamu Dezaki said it best (though the translation is kinda poor):

If anything, I'd say it was more openly popular before all of that. At least older LoGH threads weren't used just to bait and shitpost as much as most of the current ones do.
