The original only covered True End, and even then the other routes in the original all branched off the main trunk. In Zero there are two "main" branches that diverge extremely early in the story, and they just mixed events between them. That' why there are good parts but the overall story makes no sense, its trying to follow two disjoint routes at the same time.

It's not just two, all endings of S;G0 are canon. It's implied that there were countless worldlines that ended up pruned until the final route Milky-Way Crossing, but they contributed to the effort to find Steins;Gate like the D-RINE from PR that ends up in VA route and shows up in MWC again.
