Wasted his talent? Fuck off. Sorry that a little tits and blood turns your stomach--but that's a legit vibe that creators used to not be afraid of. And it brought us some of the great anime of the 80s and 90s. Life is violent and pornographic, no matter how much people try to sanitize it. Humans are sacks of shit, cum and blood wrapped around vile ideas of what to do to one another. It used to be okay to talk about it that and depict it in art. Now we just turn away like it's not there. Like society is more civilized now, when it's not. The news just stopped showing you the dead bodies.

I unironically believe vampire hunter d bloodlust is one of the best movies (not limited to animation) of all time. It's perfectly paced, the writing is spot on, the soundtrack is great.
People really underestimate how good of a movie it is.

He was one of the main directors who broke anime in the west. There was a time when Vampire Hunter D, Demon City Shinjuku, Wicked City and Ninja Scroll were considered essential viewing if you were into anime at all. They played that shit on American television way back before Adult Swim was even a gleam in your mother's eye.
As for whether it's possible to tell a dark story without reveling in the violence and sexuality of it--sure--it's possible to tell stories in a lot of ways. This was one of them, and it's sad that people like you have run this type of storytelling off. Same people who complain about rape and violence in Berserk. You just don't understand anything. There was a time when this wasn't considered an edgelord opinion. This used to be a normie anime opinion. There used to be adults in anime and they fucked and they blew things up. Now it's all moe blob shit--which was fine before it took everything over. But your generation not only doesn't know what it is missing, you actively are afraid of it. You can actually make the case of this with Kawijiri as he was so popular that he was constantly tapped to direct the "anime" versions of western properties, because he was so ubiquitous with anime in the west. So he wasted a lot of hours on shit in the mid to late 90s.

Nowadays kids venerate shit like Goblin Slayer, Shield Hero and Redo for being "edgy". If that's what edgy anime has been reduced to, then I'd rather take the moeshit anyday.
Fortunately manga has been picking up the slack. Anyone whose looking for that Kawajiri-style dark, gritty anime and OVAs we got back in the 80s and 90s should just look to manga instead.
