Anime that wouldn’t be as popular if they came out today

I love this show and it’s a part of my childhood but a lot it’s popularity was the fact that “evil” MCs were seen as novel and edgy in the 2000s

Also an obvious one but it’s more because the tropes it made popular are so played out now that it’s become a joke

This ones kinda controversial since it didn’t come out that long ago but I feel like isekai has become pretty self aware nowadays that making a “satire” of it isn’t as funny or cool as it used to be

wan piss. cancelled within 20 chapters max

Literally all of them

This would be just as popular if not more due to the wonderful character tropes. The creator knows how to laugh at anime.
Shield hero is still good but "i got reincarnated as a slime" would be a solid addition to your list.

I remember when death note and code geass were always mentioned in the same breath but nowadays death note is still super relevant especially among newer fans but code geass is barely talked about. Not saying it makes it a worse show but it does kinda show it’s popularity was a product of its time.

Lelouch from code geass

Why slime? It didn’t come out too long ago and I’d say the way people view isekai since then hasn’t changed much. Unless you mean the timing was perfect to where it became a lot of zoomers first isekai.

Disagree. I think there’s a lot of anime that would be even more popular if they came out today actually.

I mean redo the healer and that reviewers anime were pretty popular. Although I agree because I think the comedy in that show hasn’t aged greatly.

like?

Only because I think a huge part of the shows appeal is the aesthetic and that would be lost with modern animation. See what happened with the Kino remake for example

It think you nailed it with
>especially among newer fans
Code Geass is a way less accessible show in general compared to Death Note. It's not in a standard real-world setting, it's got mechas, it's got CLAMP designs, etc.

Random humor has become a lot more mainstream now cause of zoomers and internet meme culture so I feel like this would’ve been more popular.

This might be a stretch but since vanilla shounen shows like demon slayer and MHA are super popular nowadays I feel like the generic shounen shows in the past like blue exorcist and soul eater would be more popular now since the market wouldn’t be as over saturated

Samurai champloo would probably really popular considering hip hop is more widespread and there’s a lack of mature shows nowadays

Not true. Just compare CG to this Kyoukai Senki garbage and its strengths become ever more pronounced. What made Geass great 15 years ago still applies today

At some points Code Geass felt like a Gundam series with the waifus tuned up and the robots tuned down. I thought it was pretty accessible for mecha.

Gundam 00 with its peace through terrorism plot came out around the same time too.

I actually think the real world Japanese setting would make a show less accessible. Also the fact that code geass is more action packed and has more stereotypical character tropes like the other user pointed out. Most anime fans for example start off with some type of fictional settings with grand action plots before they get into slice of life or thriller shows that take place in japan

That fact that death note survived such a shitty second half and horrendous ending is a testament to how fucking good the first half was

This might apply to cowboy bebop as well but I don’t think the show is as reliant on aesthetic as lain

This and to love ru. Same reasoning as SAO, the tropes are just too played out now.
