The reason Maromi spread was the same reason Maromi and shonen bat were created: Tsukiko hid from the truth and hid behind a phantom that shielded her from the truth and from her father's anger.
Everyone in the city was buying Maromi merch to escape from their commitments and problems. As big as Maromi got that's as big as the escapism got, thus it empowered shonen bat to reach his full form, the city destroying slime.
It was only when Tsukiko faced the blind spot she had created that she could face that shonen bat never existed. Without Shonen bat, there is no Maromi so it all came to an end...only to begin again.
