Phos was objectively doing the right thing. Even the wisest gem Padpa agreed with them. Phos is just dumb but most of the other gems just treated them like shit and revealed themselves to be psycho bitches like Rutile. Rutile is utterly irredeemable after showing she’s a control freak who would rather smash Padpa rather than leave them awake because THEY have to be the one to cure Padpa's condition nobody else is allowed to.

Padpa is far from the wisest gem.
That would probably be Cinnabar, who'd figured out most of the plot short of the Lunarians before the manga even started, judging by his conversations with Phos.
And Padpa became a psycho himself, insanely dedicating himself to Phos and attacking the Gems that stayed on Earth en mass and at random unprovoked.
