yeah even if you don't count the times his mom took over he still has the highest kill count and was the only pilot who could do anything against Zeruel, the strongest angel in terms of raw physical power. Not to mention he technically won against Kaworu in a straight up Eva battle despite Kaworu having angel hax

Shinji is 100% one of if not THE most competent person in the show, and he's a genuine badass when he actually holds his ground. When he finds out his dad betrayed him by tricking him into nearly killing his classmate he demands an explanation, and when he doesn't get it he quits on the spot, fate of the world be damned, only coming back because he witnessed them IMMEDIATELY fucking everything up the second he leaves. Shinji doesn't deserve the rep he got.
