Akebi’s unselfconscious exceptionalism: intellectual, artistic, aesthetic, athletic, sartorial (her sailor fuko) was sure to get her hammered down, but surprisingly everybody took to her without question. Liked the episodic structure featuring vignettes of her classmates; deftly rendered sketches granting insight and conjuring empathy. Left me wanting more. But yeah, main girl character design was stubbornly hard to accept.

Well, to be fair, it's not like Hiro put a lot of thought about it at first. Putting on that kind of act during the class introduction, it would surely earn her some kind of short counseling session with her homeroom teacher after school, but no such thing ever occurred (or shown). Hiro might just be too obsessed with keeping the innocent tone at first, so he kind of limited what he could show in his manga. He seems to want the reader to feel the same thing Akebi feels as she slowly grows up becoming a teenage girl.

Maybe, it's not like every japanese school is a hellhole, especially this type of exclusive school, though sure I think a lot of this story are idealistic almost drama free scenarios for the first part of the manga.
I do wonder what Hiro original script was about, I'm going to guess he never really planned to have as many chapters and to focus on the whole cast like he did
