the horror of what you're swimming in doesn't really sink in while you are a child. it's especially terrifying for the public pools outside in the summer that can get 100 people in them at once. the piss and shit and genital scabs are all coming out in the water, god help you if you swim underwater and open your eyes without goggles or swallow the water
i would sooner trust a river or lake to be cleaner to swim in
