Monster fans, please tell me, what do you like about it? I liked the initial first 3 episodes as it shows Dr. Tenma having personal conflict with how the hospital is ran and how his decision allowed such a twisted person to stay alive, and he showed plenty of character with how this is all affecting him. But then it became boring as shit introducing new characters every episode I don't give a shit about and becoming formulaic with Tenma helping random people then moving on to find Johan. But then Johan himself isn't even that compelling, wow he's evil and likes bringing pain and misfortune onto others and controlling them. Granted I didn't finish it because I got too bored, I stopped at episode 19. So please tell me, what do you like about it?
Monster
>it's not shounenshit
>it's not waifufaggotry
>it's not for normalfags
what's not to like
I wouldn't call myself a fan and I'm not sure I would have watched it all if it wasn't mainly set in my home country. But yeah, if you don't get yourself fooled into thinking this will be a fast paced thrillers from the first few episodes you can just enjoy a lot of little stories being told and the plot slowly developing. Granted, this plot doesn't really pay off the way it should in the end. It's a lot of empty cliff hanger faggotry. But it still manages to build a pretty gripping atmosphere at times.
>liking a show for what it isn't instead of what it is
The epitome of being a sheep.
>I would have watched it all if it wasn't mainly set in my home country.
What did you think of the Czech locations?
What do you mean? There were nice I guess, but I'm from Germany
Great atmosphere.
Interesting look on different life philosophes.
a slow burn psychological thriller that keeps you guessing where the plot will go.
no fan-service.
interesting characters that all have different motives.
You seem to miss the point, john is not the focus for the reader/watcher. Tenma is. Seems to me like you are trying to watch something in a genre that you don't like. I would also recommend reading it rather than watch as the anime is a bit dragged out at some points.
First post worst post.
>philosophes
the kinderheim lore / mystery elements had me pretty hooked the first time I watched
It's definitely a slow burn series though even in comparison to other slow burn stuff. Monster for me was probably the most 50/50 series I ever watched in terms of 50% of the time spent watching I was incredibly entertained and the other 50% was a little bored..Honestly that probably skews more towards a 60 entertained:40 a little bored, maybe 2/3rds entertained to 1/3rd bored
>it's not for normalfags
You could show it to normies and they would actually enjoy it because it doesn't have your standard anime retardation.
I liked how at first it felt like a soap opera filled with horrible people, then when Johan actually began showing up regularly (more or less right after the part you dropped it) it got pretty interesting/suspenseful for an arc or two... then it kinda loses its momentum and never really gets it back until the final arc. There are some good chapters/episodes + high points even during the weakest part, but it starts to feel especially meandering and like Urasawa was trying to stretch it out as long as possible, even considering it was never a completely straightforward story. But I think it has some high highs and the complexity of its plot is pretty impressive-- I never really noticed any inconsistencies despite it apparently not being completely planned out from the beginning.
While I'm glad I finished it though, and enjoyed it on the whole for the most part, I don't think I'd really call myself a fan. It shifts gears a bit too much, has a few too many characters, etc. There's definitely some really boring parts too.
I agree that the hospital stuff was especially strong. I think maybe the first 9 or so episodes felt really different from what it became.
Where do you think you are?
I liked watching it and joking with my friend every time Tenma was gone for a while. Asking where the duck is Tenma and cheering when he finally shows up again. I liked all the characters and trying to guess when someone was absolutely gonna get killed. The ending with Johan staring down Tenma in the rain while making him shoot was great.
>where the duck
Fuck off, he's right. Try to do the opposite and it's just a bunch of buzzwords.
>Oh I like Monster because of the complex characters and the multi-layered plot and the deep messages about humanity and and...
All of which are more descriptive than saying "it's not shounenshit"
it's sort of an anthology as he travels with sporadic links to Johann
But people say these phrases for shounenshit too (see HxH) so they can't be trusted. Saying it's not a shounen, nor one of those cgdct seinen, automatically makes it better than 95% of the medium. That's a good enough reason for liking it.
it's boring
I haven’t watched the anime so I’m not sure how different the experience is, but I enjoyed the manga. It’s not fast paced for the most part, but some scenes can be quite tense, and all the characters are relevant and little details are important later on as the story develops. Johan’s actions are highly improbable (he’d need superpowers to pull everything off, but the series is called “Monster” after all), but the fun of the story comes from Tenna trying to find him.
The weakest part for me was the ending, it was a bit anti-climactic. But it was solid up to that point.
