The only one closer to an otaku in the show is Kensuke, that is jealous his friend got to pilot the cool robot even if he almost died doing it, but the series never delves too deep into that because Kensuke isn't a maoin character.

Shinji was happy to be in the real world doing adult things like playing music and cooking healthy meals, Gendo is the one who forced him into the nightmarish world of anime fighting the monster of the week in a giant robot .
It's not like Shinji was a basement dweller neckberd living in a basement that wanted to escaped to an Isekai to avoid real world responsabilities.

Literally Anno said Evangelion was a criticism of otaku escaping reality, but maybe he said that to spite the fans, or he was just projecting, he is an otaku himself after all and Shinji is his self-insert

I don't think Shinji is an Otaku criticism, or at least not a successful one if that was the intention.
He's probably Anno's criticism of himself though, however even though Anno himself is an otaku the otakuism isn't what he attacks or is able to depict with Shinji.
Shinji's character is a much broader depiction of a person with self-worth issues that isn't specific to otaku.
I also don't think Eva would've gotten as big as it is if it had just targeted that narrow audience.

Anno is one of those kuso "70s otaku" who doesn't like that the Japanese Animation industry adopted the anime style and because more homogeneous and took more inspiration from within itself than from outside. I for one think that was great since I actually like anime and Japanese culture and am not some kuso westaboo.
