is Urusei Yatsura worth watching, i'be gotten to ep 8 and tough the characters are cute and the comedy is good i don't really feel any point or any development, does it get better? should i watch the ovas or the movies?
Is Urusei Yatsura worth watching...

In your case: no watch something else plotfag
does the plot do something? with 100+ episodes i tough something interesting would happen at some point...
The show gets progressively better and better until about episode 100 and then it holds steady aside from a few small duds in the back half. UY has a little bit of development plot wise beyond where you're at, but it's not much. You watch it for the plot of the day, not the overarching story. For what it's worth though, it does develop into one of the best episodic comedies. Episode 10 is the first great episode, and they become more frequent from there. The movies are a bit more plot heavy, and it does have a big old ending, but it's more about the wonder of episode to episode. Urusei Yatsura is best watched a little at a time, I watched one or two a day and it became a nice constant in my life for a while. Binging it is missing the point. Honest answer you can drop it at 30 if you really don't want to keep going, at that point you'll have seen the first season and the beginning of the second. If it's not for you at that point then it's not for you.
It's really not that good, I dropped it fast.
And I like Rumiko and prefer episodic shows way more than plot heavy ones.
We don't like youtubers around here, but this is the best video for the UY skeptical:

Personally I think UY is best experienced with every episode in order, this guy makes a compelling case for the show, and gives you a look at the types of stories you can expect from the show. The first season is pretty different from where it ends up, the show really finds it's groove in the second season.
It's my favorite Rumiko but I understand if you're gonna drop the show it's early on because the first season is the low point of the show, besides the final movie (not the ending, the one made after it to cash in) which is not the best.
That makes sense.
To draw a Star Trek parallel: TNG is the greatest television ever and the first season is boring crap to the point that you need a guide telling you which half a dozen episodes are worth watching.
Will use that nerd's UY guide if I give season 1 another shot.
It's an easy parallel to make. Other than the "first season" similarity, the joy of both shows is how much they pull off with their premises. Urusei Yatsura does comedy, romance, horror, drama, mystery, action, slice of life, science fiction, historical drama, basically anything you can think of. Whole shows have been inspired by individual episodes of Urusei Yatsura, it doesn't get stale because you never know what it'll do next.
Yes, its a great series, you'll miss it when you finish watching it
But don't expect progression, its not that kind of series
No, there's no plot progression and you're not supposed to binge it. You watch 1 or 2 eps per day to see what kind of concepts they will explore. It's episodic but you will not find such variety in any other episodic anime. Urusei Yatsura is literally the one anime where anything is possible without feeling like "lol random bullshit lol". The OVAs are just like the episodes. The movies honestly are kinda overrated. It's just people who are too lazy to get into the series and they only watch the Beautiful Dreamer so they can say they've seen UY. Episode 78 is ten times better than that snoozefest. So, either watch the series or gtfo. Easy mode: Watch the soulless remake first when it comes out, then go back to the original.
Episode 8 is exactly where I dropped it. It was boring the fuck out of me. Any Forums keeps saying it gets better post episode 20 but I didn't have the patience to get there.
>We don't like YouTubers around here
Said fucking who? Just because most of them are shitty doesn't mean all of them are, though I haven't seen a single really good UY video... I should make one myself.
Everyone who isn't from reddit
>muh movie 2 bad
78 is also not at all canon and another wordy philosophical episode from Oshii
>muh reddit
Fuck off
Movie 2 IS bad as a representation of Urusei Yatsura as a whole, it's missing half the characters. Only you was much closer to the style of the show and is an objectively better film.
Go to bed Rumiko, you're drunk.
And 78 is cut from the same cloth
Retard
Come and get me, scrub.
Oshii's "philosophical" episode just consist of random circlejerking that has nothing to do with the series.
>wow atarus mom is actually psychotic? so deep man
the characters are good
but if you thought Ranma 1/2 had bad filler, hoooooooo boy
The only true stinkers for me are Ten episodes or History episodes.
The movie isn't canon either. The point is, this entire concept was done 10 times better in the series rather than the movie. That's why I mentioned that episode instead of any other.
Based and true. The first movie is the only one that can stand next to the series and worth a watch.
I'm happy Oshii got to make one UY movie that's an encapsulation of the series, and one UY movie that's his voice that just happens to use the UY characters.
>he needs a guide to watch animu
cringe
I do not, but it's the best video for someone in OPs position (stuck in the first 20 episodes of UY and wants to know if the show is for him).
