Isshin is fine as a human goofball dad, but once you add in that he's a captain level Shinigami who is centuries old and has a near full grasp of what's going on around Ichigo then his lack of care for his son becomes ... jarring. The whole Grand Fisher arc just conveyed that Isshin doesn't care that much about his son or late wife.

Honestly i find Isshin one of best dads in Shounen. He tried to gave his children as normal childhood as possible, while also teaching Ichigo how to fight from very young age. Widower working and taking care of 3 kids from very young age (Karin and Yuzu were like 3 yo when Masaki died if I remember correctly).
