i have a hard time understanding how 30 people died in that fire, but it does look like it was going really strongly. when you see large death tolls like that it probably suggests everyone was in the staircase, and then couldn't get out the front of whatever and got inundated by smoke quickly.

the death toll would have probably been 3-4 if they had just jumped out the windows.
