Well in honesty, they pulled some miracle victories in the start of the war. WW2 ultimately showed how strong economies are necessary to win a war in the long run. The combined might of the 3 other great powers, America, UK and USSR, was too much for just a single other great power with it's lackey Italy. Japan was more a hindrance for them at this point for provoking America to join.
