It is as simple as that. All his "comedy", in UY or Patlabor, just consists of people screaming obnoxiously and doing weird faces. It's not surprise that eventually he settled on making joyless navel gazing slogs instead.

I like good looking anime so I have to like this. And Mamoru Oshii is a genius and a seal of quality, GitS is his most famous film and really really really good but he has directed even better stuff like Angel's Egg and Beautiful Dreamer.
