There are so many small details in this show it's incredible. I watched it over 10 years ago and it still comes to mind occasionally.

I'm not entirely sure yet, I recently realized this is the question I've been working on much of my life. You have sun and moon, Ran is the Sun, Kano is the moon. Moon influences are deterministic and orderly (turning the "cattle" of Lux into The Shapes), Sun is about "free will" (eg "Christ" is the Son/Sun and is a solar zodiacal allegory of the sun passing through the age of Pisces, among other things). So you always have this conflict between order/slavery/biological automatons, and chaos / freedom of will. In the end though, they all for one reason or another came to be on one of two sides. Some went to the Class and were turned into Shapes, the others responded by gathering before the Seer for meaning and guidance. They talk about dominant and recessive genes a lot. The Theonormal had all dominant genes and fizzled out in apathy. Both Kano and Ran have recessive traits like attached earlobes, an unnatural otherworldy sort of yellow-green eyes, red/blue hair etc, because they are not of the physical/material world (gnostic Psychics vs Hylics). Lastly for Ichise (who has blue eyes, like doc who has blonde hair and blue eyes but is sterile (another symbol of death)) his arc culminated in a Plato's cave allegory. He leaves the false light and shadows on the wall and sees the true light (the sun in the surface world), but returns to the cave/underworld for Ran. The others, who have ceased pretending to be sane having lost the familair shadows on the walls, destroy him for this. Lux is an organism (as above, so below, as within, so without) and just as everyone dies individually, it is as though the kind of the city is destroying itself leaving only empty buildings (the dead skeleton of the organism). Man collectively is as one great mind, and one great body. The mind made the rest of its body's "tissues" destroy themselves.
A lot of things woven together. A lot seems to be sun and moon, under and overworld symbolism.

I forgot to mention, there are some myths about blue bloods and red bloods fighting each other. There are two types of blood/oxygen carriers on this planet. Hemoglobin, and hemocyanin. Hemoglobin is iron hence red when oxidized, hemocyanin is copper, hence blue when oxidized. Also reminds me of the passcode in the beginning of Deus Ex "iron and copper". I wonder what the origin of that is, and what it's referencing.
