I'm too apathetic to be surprised.

I don't believe you

Geass. It left no real mark on the industry other than prompting mecha to take place in an occupied Japan (don't expect this to have any plot relevance) and is not well-written or funny or exceptionally nice to look at. One of if not the most undeserved member of the essential anime canon, if such a thing still exists.

I disagree
Geass got a charming cast of characters, nice music, enjoyable plot. Watching it is a good time.

Yeah, I agree.

I'd throw in maybe K-On. I just don't get it. Even Lucky Star I would get more, and it isn't even talked about anymore.

What anime of the 00s has remained popular to this day though? Without getting sequels and spin-offs like Fate. And I mean insanely popular, not just a small community still talking about it.

I'm legitimately surprised people still love Yu Yu Hakusho.

Elfen Lied.

I'm surprised Haruhi has remained popular. It's a good show but I didn't expect it to live past its decade.

I thought most people recognize it as edgy garbage, especially after authors later works

Date a Live
How is this garbage still getting new seasons

Death note. Not because it's bad or anything, I just don't understand why no one took on the formula and made it better

Gurren Lagann, not so good

Who gives a shit about popularity?

I feel like it still kind of lives in this weird communal knowledge of anime in western discourse and it has been passed on for several cycles. "You're new to anime? Watch Elfen Lied, it's sick. It's violent and shit, not some kiddy stuff".
Kind of like how Trigun is brought up as something amazing, even though there is really nothing special about the anime. There's just a bunch of folks who remembered it fondly due to adult swim

I need to know what to hate.

1) technically still on going
2) it's one of the best anime ever made and as long as there are people that can recognize that it will continue to be popular.

It's just not that easy to write Death Note. Death Note itself is probably the best of its kind and isn't even close to flawless, and I'd argue isn't even truly great.

Na, something good or popular enough it will keep on.

Edgy is based. One day you'll grow up to understand that, kiddo.

It's close enough to Any Forums that I feel it counts, and it does have several anime adaptations. Fate. I just don't get how it's still such a huge IP that people will defend to the fucking death. Everything I've seen that's related to the original VN is absolute dogshit and all the characters are terrible and boring. It's crazy that what is essentially a coomerbait simulator with a somewhat cool premise and terrible everything else became such a fucking household name.
