A friend had recommended Stein's Gate to me, at one point, but time travel has never been something I was into. Generally, time travel shows allow the creator a major excuse to add in copious amounts of Deus Ex Machina, i.e. I don't feel like writing an interesting, linear, well thought-out story. I can't speak for this anime, though, since I've never seen it. Does Stein's Gate's author do the same?

Yes but the appeal is more on the characters side of the plot, time travell is just the frame where it all happens, not sure how to explain it but try it out, the anime is not a long commitment anyway
