Ken being "deeply in love" with Julia adds quite literally nothing to his character. It doesn't define his journey or his struggle or his ideals or anything. You could also remove her non-character and the story stays exactly the same. You could make Ken a monk with a vow of abstinence and the story stays exactly the same. HnK has plenty of cool machismo to spare, but it's not where you'll find a deep multi layered protagonist.
