He was never going to make it to the end, even with with a clean bill of health

You really think he wrote himself into a corner?

He never had a particular ending in his head. Last time he said, he would leave it to intuition when the time comes.

So his staff and maybe best friend (who is also a mangaka, forgot his name) could continue....

Maybe in 1000 years when we figure out how to raise the dead along with their original consciousness will we get an ending out of him.

Better to have no ending and than a shit ending - Confucius

Guts and Griffith fight the final boss. God also known as casulity, the reason things have to be the way they are. What happens after that?

I'd like to think Guts drops the whole revenge thing and just stays with Casca. The demon hordes can't attack them there at Elfhelm. They make a big deal about how Skull Knight chose the option of revenge and that's what doomed him. It's almost as if they're an avatar of a being doomed to face the same choice between revenge and being with the one they love. Guts in the end chooses Casca.

Remember the time element in the elf kingdom? Those who stay there too long can never leave. That would've played a role in Gut's choice. Even though Casca is a warrior, I don't think Guts would want Casca to go with him back out into the hellscape where she would invariably almost certainly die.

That all said, I don't think with a work of this magnitude that Kentaro did not have a set up written down and I definitely don't think that if he was sick and knew he was sick, he wouldn't have kept a written account of the major plot ideas going forward in the story and the ending so his assistants could finish it in case of his death.

If all you care about is how a story ends then you're too spiritually deprived to enjoy Berserk.

I was sad when he died, asshole. He died way too early and young. But life goes on and Berserk is too big and important to be attached to an single individual. It now belongs to all of us and we deserve a conclusion.

Fake deep story that's dark & edgy and nothing more. It's not complex, it's easy to consume and has no deep meaning. There's a reason a high IQ country like Japan thinks very little of this series.
