How come Gurren Lagann fans don't consider themselves mecha fans?

TTGL comes off as more of a battle shounen than stuff like Gundam

I don't consider myself a "genre-X fan" of any kind, thus I can't tell you specifically, but I'm someone who loves Gurren Lagann but doesn't really watch other mecha anime.
The reason is because it's not the mech aspect I enjoy, it's the over the top lolrandum manly stuff I like. The fact that the mechs in Gurren Lagann act more like giant monsters instead of robots is something I like. I.e. you don't bother thinking how come the metal of the face can distort like that to talk.
However many other mecha anime, even those that are just as lighthearted, usually take the "mecha" part serious(even if they ignore basic physics)
In other words, while there may be other mecha anime I would enjoy, the genre is not something I would use as a criteria to check out.

I mean, I do. So does my brother but we were mecha fans before GL.

because mecha isn't a real genre in the first place.

But I do, I'm even looking for other mecha shows to see if I find anything I can enjoy as much as I enjoyed TTGL.

>I don't consider myself a "genre-X fan" of any kind
pure insecurity and cope from lack of time spent on any particular genre. or alternatively, a retard who's a gainax/trigger/other studio stan

Because the focus of Gurren Lagann isn't about robots. Even some of the mechas are just physical manifestions of people's willpower instead of being the usual machinery porn. The mechs in TTGL all have faces and tongues, weird stretchy cartoony almost organic features. It's the anti-mecha show, more about the psychology of a man and about the coming of age of the MC.

I do, its just not all mecha is good. Just like not all other shows in specific genres are good.

Or maybe someone with an open mind who doesn't judge a show just based on a genre?
Sometimes I like mecha, sometimes battle shonen, sometimes sports, sometimes romance, sometimes comedy, sometimes horror etc..
Thus giving me a label like "Mecha-fan" or "Shonen-fan" is retarded

pure insecurity and cope from lack of time spent on any particular genre. or alternatively, a retard who's a gainax/trigger/other studio stan

There are like 1 or 2 mecha in total that are about robots. Not even most Gundam entries are about robots.

That's what Super Mecha is like actually. Super Mecha doesn't follow the whole science behind the mecha genre it just uses giant robots and uses some kind of magical force to fuel them.

being open minded is just a cope for being a newfag who's just casually scrolled through a list of highly recommended shows and jump from show to show to check off shows from a genre checklist to prove how cultured they are
someone who's a fan of movies will have their genre preferences while still being open to watching things outside their wheelhouse
people who like everything dont like anything in particular

In a way that makes it very much a mecha show because mecha are almost always treated as extensions of the pilot, it’s just that in Gurren Lagann’s setting, it’s exaggerated further because the mecha operate on a phenomenon tied to the pilot’s willpower and mental state.

mecha = a type of weapon.
not a genre.

Wow, projecting much, are we?
My first anime I have watched around 30 years ago. Must have watched over 100 anime by now. But sure, "Newfag" whatever helps you sleep at night knowing you're an idiot who judges something based on retarded criteria that don't mean anything of quality or taste.

lol what did i expect? just 100 anime in 30 years?
might as well go to the retirement home now boomer

Big gurren lagann fan here
also big mazinger, getter, gaogaigar fan, etc. Most Gurren Lagann fans are super robot fans lol

I do, for me its the mecha shounen that never was in that it has everything i'd want a shounen based on mecha has without overtly being touted as such.
Additionally anyone saying TTGL isn't a mecha anime may as well say the same for Mazinger or Getter Robo.

I'd kill for an adventure shounen mecha anime thats hot blooded and not soley pandered to coomer shit but alas that seems it'll never be the case

Gurren Lagann is the peak of super robot so it’s hard to go backwards.

If an anime or manga has a person riding in a mecha or has considerable enough focus on sais mecha its a mecha

Exactly Gundam is a space opera but its also Mecha and for people saying mecha needs exact science, Gundam introduced fucking space psychics in the very first series

Because it isn't mecha. The gunmen aren't robots, they're fucking weird cartoon creatures that can transform based on the pilot's mood.

Super robot vs real robot. Gurren Lagann fans didn’t watch the show because of the robots, or how they impacted the themes of the show. They watched it because of how cool the characters were and how hype it was.
A real robot show focuses a lot more on how said technology has impacted the world, and the limitations of that technology are usually set in stone, think shows like patlabor, gundam 8th ms team, macross etc

Tbh I think gurren Lagann has a lot more in common with shows like kill la kill despite it having no mecha in it.

Gurren Lagann has far more in common with shows like Getter, Gunbuster, and GaoGaiGar than it does with Kill La Kill

These threads really show that most of Any Forums is newfags that have no idea what they're talking about.

>TTGL is good because the focus isn't the mecha, it's the characters!
I'd be really curious to know what anime actually "focuses on the mecha", if TTGL doesn't. You hear the same thing said about Evangelion too and is just as retarded there.

>TTGL is essentially a hype shonen anime, it's not about the realistic mecha and technology!
Yeah, that's called Super Robot, there are about 638737 shows like that starting from Mazinger Z.

At least shut the fuck up if you don't want to lurk and watch something else.
