Holy crap, there are several instances in the last two episodes that showed or hinted at scenes that are featured in EOE, plus, you know, the whole plot still needing to be wrapped up. "B..but it's about the emotional growth" oh fuck you, that's only part of it, the other is about giant cyborgs fighting against giant monsters that are being directed by a bunch of scientist for a hidden goal.
The only thing Anno didn't realize is how much the fanbase would get pissed about this placeholder ending until the real ending is finished.
