The basic gist is he genuinely tried to make the world a better place by plunging it into pure might makes right anarchy, realized he wasn't strong enough to bring this about, and so spent much of the last decades becoming so strong as to bring about Joyboy, the only man who could beat him (and, thus, be strong enough to change the world). Every other aspect of his character is downstream from this, including Yamato, who presumably was only even conceived in the hopes of literally birthing Joyboy.
