It is not even just about books. Paints, which is what they are making to be used as printing inks, should already be accessible and common knowledge to common people because the materials are so abundant and the colorful results have so much potential application not limited to books or even paintings. It does not require special knowledge or trade secrets. Knowing the causes like type of mana is not even necessary to make useable paint. "Oh no, the pigment made a different color than it appears and we're too stupid to figure out. I guess we can't use this beautiful paint then."
Now selling it wholesale is one thing, but that is more of a legal matter.

I think you're really overestimating the economic restrictions of the guild based economy in Ehrenfest. They have magical contracts that can kill you for leaking guild secrets.
