Think about how FP deals with the central theme of identity and how perception of the self can shape reality or who you become or how painful it can get. Agni isn't a savior, or a hero, or a god, or even a very nice person to begin with. Judah isn't really his sis even though he would very much like to believe it. FP is about characters who lie to themselves, or are pushed to accept a convenient lie because the alternative is cognitive dissonance.
Togata isn't a shoehorned character with a shoehorned internal conflict in this context, she ("he") feels like a dude trapped inside a girl's body; again it's about identity, how you perceive yourself, how you present yourself to others, how you mask yourself with another identity for whatever reason, how destructive that can be. That's why she ("he") is obsessed with film-making; actors are people who pretend for a living.
The "plot" of FP doesn't really go anywhere and can feel all over the place, but that's because you need to look at themes.
