The spin-off crews of the Rocks Pirates are study in crew/family dynamics, just like the Strawhats (and, essentially, every crew in the story). The three captains, Big Mom, Kaido, and Whitebeard saw the flaws of the Rocks crew, which we can only assume, based on what the three characters have said, was a problem of the individual members having their own will they placed above the crew. They all sought to fix this problem in differing ways: Big Mom realized that Rocks wasn't authoritative enough to keep the crew loyal, and so she pressganged her bundles of joy into a pirate crew, where they would always be below her by virtue of being her children. Kaido was probably physically stronger than Rocks, and so when he lost, felt nothing about leaving a loser like him behind. To fix this, he became the strongest creature alive and created a crew of his opponents whose wills he broke--if he always won and his crew had their wills break, they'd never betray him. Whitebeard was the smart one--he realized that the way to keep personalities in line is to grow them, to foster them. He became a father not to rule over his sons, but to nurture them, and he became the strongest man not to keep them in line, but to protect them, and to bear their failures for them.
