The author of the Japanese novel "The Apothecary Diaries" searched for two manga artists to make a manga adaptation of the same novel at the same time.

Left one is too generic and reeks of try-hard moe.
The art of the right one is somehow simple. But it's simplicity is great to highlight important details, which is crucial for detective story. Plus it's pacing is better.

You need the elaborate style of the left to make the often fairly dry conversation and plotting interesting.
Right doesn't have the same expressiveness or dynamism to the art, so it doesn't carry the story along as well in the visual medium.

Were they by the same publisher or different ones?
Did all bookstores literally place them side by side or was there some exclusivity so people could think that there was only one?

There are quite a few novels with 2+ concurrent manga adaptions, though. Dahliya comes to mind.
