I remember watching this as it aired, along with the other anons who were praying something horrific would actually happen. Nothing really happened and for a while I was convinced this show was just a massive waste of time. Over the years I realized it was actually just alright. I suppose it was meant to bait you like that.

The manga adaptation was a lot edgier and darker than the anime actually turned out to be so there must have been some conflicting ideas on the tone of the series.

That's kind of the issue. People were obviously hyped/hoping for some disaster. In the end, all the teased stuff was pretty much nothing and it really was about character development/coming of age.
The issue is that what it offered clearly wasn't as appealing as the mislead. I really don't get how stuff like this gets funded. It should have been obvious that not going through with a tragedy would result in negative reactions to the reveals.

Did anyone actually die? I remember so little of it. Only that one girl was scared of wasps and imagined that she was attacked by a giant wasp. One guy was a businessman who either got fired or was just angry with his work because he failed his project. And that girl that was the daughter of a priest or her mother was raped by a priest or something like that. She was attacked by a mask. And one girl tried to prove the theory of her father.
