It's harder to end when there are all those taxpayer-subsidized benefits such as shoppng with no sales tax, medical care, and retirement benefits. Another plus is that many husbands retire out of the military and then go into another career. Thus, there are multiple incomes to the household otherwise known as double or triple dipping. The family next door to me was retired and they were completely retired (no more working) and were triple dipping with a monthly income of approx $15K USD (he had two pensions, his wife had a pension from my corp employer, and both had social security).
The USA military gives one of the largest pensions anywhere and has free medical care and drugs for the spouse. His retirement pay was over 50% of his regular army pay. This is another reason why so many people say the USA military is basically a giant social welfare program. And it's true that the USA military is the largest single employer of american youth.

Madame Bovary did this concept better and there was the added cultural aspect of women of the main lady character's class having little or no social autonomy in anything but the layabout rich's economic class.
