Because despite Goku's faults he loves his son and believes in his hidden power. Also, Goku has already got a feel for what (at the time) Perfect Cell's power was, by comparison, when he stopping at Korin's place, after he and Gohan finished training and asked Korin to gauge a sample of Goku's power, while in his Full-Powered Super Saiyan form. Korin confirmed that Cell was stronger, which likely made Goku accept fully that Gohan was the only person currently on Earth who had a chance at defeating Cell.
As an aside, Vegeta, who already fought Cell at this point, felt the portion of power Goku had showed to Korin in comparison Cell's Perfect Form and wrongly assumed that Goku was at full power and went back into the Room of Spirit and Time again to train during those 10 days before the Cell Games, with the short-sighted goal to surpass the benchmark which Goku set; this all ended up blowing up in Vegeta's face when Goku powers up fully, which hurt Vegeta two-fold when the realization that Goku's son was not only stronger than even Goku, but was Earth's only hope to defeat Cell.
