I have a hard time imagining Sakura rejecting her regardless of how straight she is, Tomoyo just convinced herself it was hopeless and that's why it's frustrating, I would've even preferred her being let down easy rather than never giving it a try.

Sakura, as card mistress and heiress to Clow's legacy, is unironically a magical powerhouse, to the point she can meaningfully frustrate the Witch of Dimension. It's a little weird CLAMP only played with this trope very indirectly. Like the cute Sakura must always meet opponents stronger than her or something, while, in-universe, there isn't many things that is or should be.
Imagine you're a run-off-the-mill mage. You can cast a fireball, maybe. Then someone tells you: btw, that girl, she's the card mistress. She can fly, stop time, control every elemental powers, erase you from existence, etc. That would probably get a reaction out of you. Hell, there should be dozen hidden factions that should have wanted to contact Sakura by the point her existence became known.
The first movie kinda had the start of something like that with Syaoran's family, but they were mostly fawning over Sakura's cuteness. Tsubasa kinda has it toward the very end, but only very indirectly. "Sakura meeting the magic world and everyone shitting themselves in fear" would have made a good concept for the second series, not the "let's capture cards again for the third time" stuff we got.
