4) we need to feel that Asuka would never forgive him for this which ties into the payoff at the end of the film when she does.
5) Shinji needs to have his heterosexual desires reaffirmed after the previous episode toyed with his homosexuality.
6) the theme of running away resulting in worse outcomes in Evangelion is at play here because Shinji runs away from his problems to escape into pleasure.
7) ever notice how there are a recurring set of injuries in Evangelion, namely an injured eye and a wounded arm? That’s a biblical reference.
