The ultimate purpose of the Haruhi anime was to promote the Haruhi LN. Haruhi's author had not put out new chapters in years (the 10th novel was supposed to release in June 2007 and didn't end up coming out until May 2011, and after that there wasn't another chapter until 2020. There was nothing for Kadokawa to promote.
In the meantime, KyoAni had begun adapting other properties such as Chuunibyou. Over time, there was a shift from adapting other companies' properties to getting the rights to series themselves and adapting them, which meant higher profits for them. And both the guy who was the main liason with Kadokawa and the director of the Haruhi anime were demoted for various reasons.
There's been like 2 chapters in over a decade, and that's not enough for an anime; meanwhile the anime world has largely moved on. If it had been an issue of Aya Hirano's scandal they would've replaced her at worst.

After the scandal broke both LiSA and Suzuki took a hiatus from their respective careers and Suzuki allegedly attempted to commit suicide. The Japanese take their celebrity cheating scandals even more seriously than Americans do, and Suzuki's continued "hiatus" has led to him being recast in pretty much all of his roles.
