I am not a full time One Piece reader but from reading chapter 1044, one thing isn't getting out of my head. Why do only Zoan devil fruits have a mind of their own? Why not make it so Devil Fruits in general have a mind of their own because they're fucking devil fruits.

Zoan fruits having a mind of their own has been a thing since ALABASTA. Mr. 4's Gun Dog was created by "feeding" a zoan fruit to a gun. It's seen again with Spandam's Elephant Sword, and Caesar Clown's Axolotl Slime. Those combinations are only possible because the Zoan devil fruit is alive, allowing something inanimate to become a living thing when combined with it. This is also probably why only Zoan fruits have been able to be reproduced as Smile fruits, they're cloning a living thing, whereas they couldn't clone Lightning or clone the concept of Splitting Yourself Up Into Smaller Pieces. It's always been there. Always.
