Nozomu Itoshiki is depressed. Very depressed. He’s certifiably suicidal, but he’s also the beloved schoolteacher of a class of unique students, each charming in her own way: The stalker. The shut-in. The obsessive-compulsive. The girl who comes to class every day with strange bruises. And Kafuka, the most optimistic girl in the world, who knows that every cloud has a silver lining. For all of them, it’s a special time, when the right teacher can have a lasting positive effect on their lives. But is that teacher Itoshiki, a.k.a. Zetsubou-sensei, who just wants to find the perfect place to die?
Chapter 54: The Cat Who’d Heard it A Million Times
>Yogurt One of Japan’s most popular yogurt brands is called Bulgaria. In Japan, Bulgaria is synonymous with yogurt.
>Amuro Amuro is one of the main characters in the anime Gundam, and this was his catchphrase. Amuro uttered this phrase before every takeoff. The girl pictured here is singer Namie Amuro.
>Mitarai The sign featured here actually reads mitarai in Japanese. The characters that spell out mitarai can also be read as “bathroom,” hence the reference to potty jokes.
>Oku-san The sign here actually says Oku. In Japanese okusan means “wife,” so to refer to Mr. Oku as Oku-san would make him sound like a woman. Since this joke wouldn’t quite make sense in English, we opted to adapt it a wee bit.
>Kana-chan The original Japanese reads “Hey Kanako, if you marry someone named Oba, you’ll become Oba Kanako.” Baka means “stupid” and Obaka na Ko would mean “stupid kid.”
>Tsubasa There’s a popular soccer-themed manga titled Captain Tsubasa.
>That’s just the way it is Café maids often wear cat ears, and apparently they are frequently asked why they do so. “That’s just the way it is” has become the pat response to this question.
>Rokkou Rokkou is a popular Japanese bottled water brand. The city of Rokkou is located in the mountains of Hyogo prefecture.
>Smile “Smile” is actually listed on the menu of McDonald’s restaurants in Japan. I believe there is no charge for smiles.
>Ooizumigakuen There is a train station called Ooizumigakuen, which means “Ooizumi School,” however there is no actual school in the area.
>Shimane Shimane is one of Japan’s least populated prefectures.
