I’m just pointing out that there is a difference between asspulls and contrivances. We’ve known Luffy was Joyboy for a long time now. Nika was introduced to us around a year ago.
If you dislike this chapter then that’s valid. Just don’t call it something it’s not

Luffy being Joyboy has been known to us since the Oden flashback. Hell the name Joyboy (i.e. “happy boy”) was already a dead giveaway.
The Nika thing was introduced to us a while ago. It didn’t come out of nowhere. Plus Sun = Freedom has always been a common motif in the series

This wasn't why the twist happened. Luffy having the Nika Nika doesn't change his powerlevel. Instead of having a fruit turns him into rubber, he now has a fruit that turns him into a man who is made out of rubber.
Gear 5 is just Awakening. If his fruit was still just a rubber fruit, it would've been the same shit

I will say that this twist WAS contrived, but it actually makes a lot of sense from a thematic standpoint

No that's not an asspull. That reveal wasn't a powerup or anything that gave Luffy an edge in combat. Asspulls are things that make things easier for the character, and that's not what this was.
