Making them work is genuinely better for them. The only reason we scoff at the thought of child labor is that we have the better alternative of schooling. If they're just going to lay half dead on the orphanage floor all day you might as well make them learn how to provide for themselves by working. Even their eventual owners will think twice before disposing of them when they know an actual valuable trade. Although you also lead into shitty situations like the part where one of the robes wants to get married but the noble buying him out of good will can't even afford him.
