I'm so glad the term edgy fell out of favor one it became apparent the people who use it are even gayer than trashy series that coast on rape and gore. That said, Akame ga Kill stands out to me as remarkably shitty.
I'd agree but 'maturity' as a concept in writing is a bit too vague to accurately define. To this day people can't agree if Blood Meridian was a profoundly mature and poetic tale of human violence or an obtuse piece of non-punctuated shit jacking off to the barren wasteland of the 19th century American south.

It never did you reddit user.

Tact.

if i like it then it is dark

I think you can class something as edgy if the writing becomes melodramatic for the sake of just being fucked up and doesn't actually lend itself to anything.

Edgy is that aesthetic of a 15-year old who thinks they are making something dark.

that doesnt mean anything

I mean it's something you're either going to get or not. The edgy meme was the sort of thing said when talking down to someone like a kid who thinks they are being dark like a Sonic fan writing some fan-fiction about their version of Punished Knuckles or something. People would say things like "don't cut yourself on that edge". Edgy is the equivalent of a teenager trying to rob a convenience store with a butter knife.

Weather or not I like it.

Any Forums belongs here no more than reddit does, go back and shitpost about Elder Rings Oblivion.
What if the story is full of dark and violent shit that seemingly lends to nothing but isn't one bit whiny or melodramatic? I refer once again to Cormac McCarthy's work. It's not quite as black and white as it initially seems.
Sounds to me like what you're going on about has everything to do with ridiculing a particular online attitude and little to do with actually analyzing the substance of a story. And no, furry Sonic fan comics don't count or else we have to include shit like CWCville. The problem started, much like with the word pretentious, when children started using the term to ridicule anything that they personally disliked, whether the story had any merit or strong points was irrelevant because edgy. We hit this point over six years ago, by the way.

Stop bullshitting. You know exactly what kind of material that is.

Yes, the differentiation between dark and edgy is entirely about ridiculing a particular online attitude. That's why it's an Internet meme. It's like *tips fedora*. At its heart it's about retards on the Internet but some people apply its principles to works that exist outside the Internet. The stick up your ass seems to be that someone calling something edgy means that it's bad. These things are just a matter of perspective, edgy =/= bad. A lot of the time the problem is the difference between people who take the edgy shit in something seriously and those who can see how hilarious it is. A series like Freesia has a lot of edgy elements in it but it has a strong sense of humor about it.

Don't get all butthurt just because I'm not mindlessly agreeing with everything you say, faggot. We're on the same page that edgy is nothing more than a descriptive term of dubious application at best, the problem is that anyone can use it at any time for anything based purely upon as you say, personal perspective and thus a sizable majority will invariably use the term poorly if not outright incorrectly, and have for years now. And so we have no choice but to circle back to analyzing the writing itself as objectively as we are capable without the bullshit labeling of "but is it edgy which means bad or is it gritty which means good?" if we ever wish to make any actual point, edginess be damned. Such thematic elements are too firmly in the territory of personal preference to have any place in discussing what makes a series "good", it can only influence whether you are likely to enjoy it or not on a personal level.

If I don't like an anime with "mature" themes then its edgy.

when it becomes gratuitous

Brotherhood will forever be the better anime

The tone and how the characters in the show behave. A good sign of an edgy show is characters screaming and overreacting.

You wish

Edgy = Dark for the sake of being dark

> oh by the way i was raped lol
> oh by the way lets kill all these kids just because im bad lol
> oh by the way no i wont help you totally helpless innocent person cause lol
