My headcanon is that each Saiyan has a limited amount of Zenkais, Goku used a lot on Earth and the remaining ones on Namek, Bejita used all of his on just Namek (fought more battles).
They of course still get stronger from facing strong opponents, but they don't get boosts from being sent to death's door.
