What do I do now that I've finished all of Satoshi Kon's work? It really is all downhill from here, huh?
Over the years I'd caught up on his works in between watching other anime and it always felt like a complete motivation of the medium. Every time I've rewatched Millenium Actress it's moved me more than almost any piece of media.
If you asked me to throw together a Top 10 Anime List, all 5 of his works would make that top 10.
Who else can even compete? Is anyone out there still doing stuff this interesting?
What is it with fags on Any Forums that watch a few anime and think they'll never be able to enjoy another anime ever again. Usually it's the retard talking about LoGH but, while I don't know if I've ever seen the same thing with Kon, there are a lot of people who put Kon on a pedestal in a similar manner.
If you think you're incapable of enjoying anime anymore then go watch live action movies, which were probably what were most influential on Kon compared to other anime. You probably would rather complain about anime though than risk being seen as a newfag in the world of film.

Bruh I've watched films all my life, I've watched anime all my life, I've watched western cartoons all my life. Some things are just better than others. I don't hate all other anime, but nothing else I've watched has come anywhere near this stuff. Closest was Serial Experiments Lain.
Jace Walker
Learn to appreciate other things. It's the same thing you need to do when you first start watching movies beyond the shit that gets popular in theatres. Same with anime. You are the same as people who watch Kubrick and Tarkovsky stuff and proclaim that all other film is worthless.
Ethan Baker
>You are the same as people who watch Kubrick nah Kubrick was always mid anyway
Asher Wright
jesus christ peak fucking pretentious watch criterion collection stuff if kon and lain is what it takes to blow your mind
yeah sure
Cooper Smith
can't help but notice none of you are naming any other anime lul
William Myers
I put off Kon for a million years because assuming he was overrated let me be lazy. Watched Millennium Actress last week. Hard to overstate how good of an anime film it is.
Brayden Collins
you could try watching good anime
Gavin Allen
My recommendation is to learn to enjoy other things. If you can't do that then no amount of recommendations I give you will help because I'm not a fag that idolizes Kon. Just like no amount of recommendations will help someone obsessed with Kubrick and Tarkovsky since they'll just say "it's not like these" and dislike it. The problem is inside you.
Justin Cruz
it took me years to get to anything else after Paprika cause I liked it so much, that I couldn't imagine any of his work would live up to it.
Imagine my surprise in finding out that pretty much all of his other work is actually even better. Millennium Actress I especially expected the least out of since it was the "least surreal" in premise but it became my favorite.
Gavin Howard
Try Casshern Sins, unironically the deepest anime ever made
Evan Richardson
Read Opus so you can at least not be the complete shittiest kind of Kon fan
Zachary Moore
I did. read World Apartment Horror too
Carter Harris
Are you even really looking? Go watch LOGH or Royal Space Force or some ghibli films. I don't have the slightest fucking idea what you "tried" to watch and didn't enjoy.
Henry Morales
k youre okay in my book
Brandon Morgan
kon is so fucking overrated his movies are WEAK
Jaxon Long
Hell, go watch a french cartoon like The Summit of Gods or Flee if you want something grounded.
Nolan Reed
If you want recs, I've watched a bunch of anime this year and only one film has been on the same level as Millennium Actress: On-Gaku
Jeremiah Harris
Never seen his stuff so can't comment really but I'm curious, why do you think they are so good? What do they do that you feel other anime does not do?
Adrian Richardson
SEL and Ghost in the Shell 1995 are as good as Kon, if you don't understand everything in Lain go to the website Thought Experiments Lain for more info. There isn't a lot of philosophical animes left but there are a ton of amazing theatrical experiences you haven't seen. Gundam Thunderbolt December Sky, Golgo 13, Macross Plus and Macross DYRL. If you haven't seen Porco Rosso then you really should too.
Not OP but Kons work are amazing pieces of story telling that go beyond anime and even movies in their quality of narration. They're right up there with some of the best literature I've read in terms of narrative excellence.
