I ain't "REEEEEING" over it, but it does feel like a clumsy attempt to make Luffy's powers more special, when he didn't really need it. I think if this were something Oda had planned out, the scene of them talking about how they changed the fruit's name would have happened much, much earlier. But as it is, it feels like a kind of bizarre retcon.
