Anime went mainstream.

Due to the assimilation of popular normalfag hobbies with hobbies and interests thought to be stereotypically reserved for outcasts, "nerds" and so on; people are now less likely to get weird looks for interests in the "nerd" hobbies.
Contrastingly, this image board (which was founded to discuss these sorts of otaku subjects) has inexplicably been flooded with a deluge of newfags in recent years, who actually make a case of complaining about things like anime being posted here. I would honestly prefer this case was the opposite — with normalfags still making pariahs of people with otaku interests so they can fuck off and mind their own business; and with the vermin who came to Any Forums of all the places on the internet to complain about it going back to where they originated from.
I wish the internet would return to its old state of having exclusive websites for different, varying interests where people made the effort to lurk and integrate; as it stands the internet is an identityless swamp caused by the same websites and companies amalgamating completely unrelated interests into the same places.

You faggots stopped gatekeeping

This has happened to some degree but I think you're overstating it a bit. I still wouldn't tell 95% of the normal people that I know IRL that I watch anime.

I didn't have to hide my powerlevel as a kid because literally everyone in elementary and middle school where I lived watched anime and some read manga. I don't really talk to many people these days in general but I imagine that because of easy streaming access and me not watching ongoing anime generally even if someone brought up anime as a topic I wouldn't know much about the kind of thing they would want to talk about.

this is the real answer

People who care about their "power levels" are probably too ugly to compensate their otaku interests.

95% of people I know watch anime. All the normalfag watch attack on titan and grew up with toonami

A lot of this

How long until normalfags co-opt being an incel and hating women? It's pretty much the only thing I have left.
