Manga theory: Bardock used Super Saiyan against Gas but was unable to fully control it and thus wasn't ever able to access it again. This would make sense given Goku's statement about how he had to "practice" with Super Saiyan even after the fight with Freeza, suggesting that he was only able to activate it during the heat of that specific battle with the emotions resulting from Krillin's death still fresh within him. This would eliminate the need for a retcon (why didn't Bardock just go Super Saiyan when he attacked Freeza) while simultaneously canonizing Bardock as the true first Super Saiyan since Yamoshi, giving even more weight to Goku being the first to achieve and control the transformation since he's from that same lineage.
Alternatively, Bardock used the Oozaru/Super Saiyan combo alluded to in Vegeta's monologue about the Original Super Saiyan in the anime. If we go this route, it still eliminates the need for a retcon (Bardock simply couldn't use Oozaru during the fight with Freeza) and also canonizes Golden Oozaru from GT, which along with SSJ4 is one of the best transformations in the franchise, as it pays homage to the Saiyans' inherently animalistic nature and combines it with the trademark color of SSJ.
