Why is the anime paused?

I swear, I'm not trying to troll here, I legitimately want to know: Why One Piece is so popular? The art is unique, albeit a little ugly, but with how long it's been running, It seems like Luffy would've become the pirate king by now. I feel like if I started reading it, I'd get burnt out by it like when I try to read American comics, and realize that my favorite characters are just going to exist forever, never getting closure or a proper ending. What's the status quo right now? I watched the anime when I was a kid and stopped a bit after the little deer guy was introduced. Is it worth getting invested in? Is there an end in sight?

Because Oda spends time on the conflicts of each island and nation they go to, sometimes too much so, and usually gives the side characters fights of their own to not make them useless. That's why Nami has more victories by herself in pre time skip than the entire Naruto female cast for all of the series.

Basically every millennial/early zoomer grew up reading or watching it and formed a connection to it. Call it nostalgia goggles if you want but there's nothing wrong with it, in fact it's great. It's true that at this point the anime is entirely unwatchable and the manga has been extremely hard to follow on a weekly basis at some points (bird cage, wano act 2), but I'm not giving up until I see that fucking treasure revealed

Hm I wouldn't call it a masterpiece of storytelling or anything even close to that, but the plot progression is done so that the sense of wonder and variety from island to island always tries to distinguish itself. At it's core, it's a treasure hunt for a mystery and the main factor that had me hooked on it for around 15 years was that it didn't take itself too seriously and it's just a fun read.

Speaking of it, I think the most serious flaw of OP is how much it's tied to its "tried and tested" formula. Think of it, an adventure story where vast majority of the storylines comes down to defeating a local tyrant, a rescue arc or both. We could seriously use more unique stories like the Gaimon one off chapter. No big bad to beat, not a setup for a battle with an evil organization, just an adventure on a weird isalnd with a bittersweet ending. That's probably one of the reasons G8 arc filler is so beloved, it's both One Piecy and at the same time very different.

the status quo is, of the four strongest pirate captains in the world, Luffy is currently about to win an all-out war against the one most infamously hard to defeat and his allies have succesfully taken down another of the four in the same battle.
Luffy currentky has two of the four map pieces needed to find the One Piece and once he wins this war he'll have the third.
Also the world government is about to start the final war against pirates using a mysterious new superweapon

I think that's about it? She also partnered with Luffy against Cracker and some other times with Usopp but for solo that's about it. She's still useful in other ways constantly.
