Incredible post, OP. Very insightful of you.

In retrospect literature was never good. Yes, even the Greeks and Romans were full of kitsch like this

nigga NOTHING WAS EVER GOOD
WE FOOL OURSELVES ALL THE TIME
it's a strange world

I think this thread is actually insightful in many ways. A lot of teenagers watched Elfen Lied as their first "real" anime and view it with rose tinted glasses and that experience shaped their opinion on all anime as being deep and sophisticated.
This doesn't even touch upon the fact that the anime industry is government sponsored propaganda created as a political tool to establish Japan as a cultural leader in East Asia to oppose Chinese dominance (propped up by the US.) I guess the realisation that anime is just a psy-op either breaks you or makes you want to break things because you can't admit to yourself you've been lied to since your childhood.

Every industry in every country is a government psy-op. Do you think that the movie or book industry in the USA is free? Only the gov decide what can be read or seen.

>and view it with rose tinted glasses and that experience shaped their opinion on all anime as being deep and sophisticated.
haha, no, the only thing anyone ever says about this show anymore is that it was bad

fucking genius holy shit thank you for opening my eyes

The seeds have been sown already.
Besides, as long as China keeps censoring its fiction stuff from ecchi, it'll never really be truly appealing

I liked it back then and I still like it now. The art aged worse than the stuff before or the stuff that came after it but other than that, it's still entertaining and that is what matters above all.

But Elfen Lied is from the 00s.

anime is just a buzzword

Yes, that's true user but a lot of anime fans and weebs believe that Japan is different in this regard because Japan wants to be seen as different. If you tell them that anime is basically the Japanese Hollywood in terms of government sponsorship it's like challenging a dogma that Japan is differenter and uniquer than any other country. They wouldn't be weebs if they didn't believe this. The Japanese believe this about themselves as well.

On this board, yes, your average anime watcher in the West doesn't browse Any Forums at all and most will keep the mindset of a teen that blood, gore, and tits = mature

Elfen Lied was kino

>The seeds have been sown already.
What seeds?

>your average anime watcher in the West doesn't browse Any Forums at all and most will keep the mindset of a teen that blood, gore, and tits = mature
Can you post examples? Everyone says this but I don't see anyone actually acting like it.

anime is a japanese nazi psyop to weaken the west, why do you think all the twitter users have anime avatars?

Any Forums is a really underground and not exactly cool place. Reddit is more of a safespace for the average Internet user and that's why Reddit users are usually despised on Any Forums, it's because Redditors are way too sheltered compared to an average Any Forumsnon

Woah dude gimme some of that crack

>Any Forums is a really underground and not exactly cool place.
15 years ago, maybe.

Look at the comments under any Elfen Lied episode on YouTube and you will find the prototypical weeb there who thinks it's the best anime ever. I think only in the last three years many people realized that it's just torture porn so newer comments will also take note of that but many, many more will regard it highly. If you were an anime fan in Europe in the early 2010s you couldn't get past it at all when asking for recommendations.
