Rin is a well-rounded character with the capabilities to be both a protagonist and a heroine. In the former area, she carries a purpose and motivation as she's involved in a larger-than-life realm as a pragmatic mage carrying out her duties and what's expected of her as a Master participating in a Holy Grail War. On the other side, romantic entanglement with Shirou is a complementary aspect that tempers the idiosyncratic mage within her and it enabled her to grow in a way of a normal girl, and this ultimately serves to offer contrast to the serious and earnest honor student/mage side of her.
And of course, she's a cute Grade S tsundere with endearing chemistry with not only Shiro but also Archer and Lancer.
