The hat is ok. He probably looks better without It though. He could do without the hat and the clown. Other than that, everything else about him is a work of art.

In the manga - he's okay, the closest person Gon had to a father, and his best lead to him, that's why his rage was understandable.
In the fucking 2011 anime they fucking ruined him by skipping the early chapter with him and then suddenly forcing viewers to give a fuck about him not setting up the emotional attachement from the start. I still can't believe how they pulled that shit off and people still praise 2011.

What did he do in the early chapters that warrents gon being that angry

Im not one to point out character flaws as if they are flawed writing, but this chain of events seems pretty retarded to me. It would be weird if he got that angry and someone killing kurapika, let alone kite. Would have worked better if his aunt was a hunter, thats how she mean ging, and she dies the same way kite did
