Erina is an interesting ""villain"" though and Souma never being able to surpass her was an interesting choice from the author, too bad most of the rest of the story was average at best.

It was a good series in the beginning.

It's a prime example of why writers can't pull the trigger too early on romantic subplots. Once the main heroine got her arc and fell for the MC, it became impossible to not speed towards the finale while maintaining the hype. At the very least, they would have had to have altered the status quo and been very skillful at doing so. Making her ugly just sealed the manga's fate.

Erina ruined the series though. The last arcs focused on her side of the family and their shitty drama.
