Saber and Rin couldn't make Shirou be less of a suicidal maniac in a lifetime yet Rider does it in an afternoon Heaven's Feel suddenly decides at the end that it wants to be about Shirou learning that he wants to live (with no buildup whatsoever) Route pretends to be all dark but it has the most cutesy fluffy ending out of them all, even more so than UBW's Good End
The equivalent in Tsukihime is if Shiki suddenly decided "I wanna be a vampire, eat people and then kill myself" in Hisui or Kohaku's routes.
My mistake was treating Shirou as a character and not like the little bitch he is. Shiki, Kiritsugu and Ryougi have more balls than he ever will. Hell, even the loli spin-off Shirou is more of a man.

You gain nothing from Fate and UBW that you don't from HF. HF has a complete arc that doesn't require Fate or UBW whatsoever. If anything, it makes them look cheap.

Yeah obviously they're not standalone stories, you can't even play them in the order you want. That doesn't mean one route is more "correct" than the others. The routes are different answers to the same question, all of them are valid and acceptable.

It might be better from a writing POV. But I found the VN more captivating because it actually puts you in the protagonist's shoes and allows you to make the decisions, even if it would lead to Shirou dying in a horrible fashion. That and the first person view just proves that videogames, fundamentally, are just the better medium for immersion, or at least they can be if they try.

Pretty much. And Saber is actually such a boring and hollow character on her own, you wouldn't even want to play her route. Fate Zero literally gave her a fucking character and personal arc to care about, she had neither in Fate. I could swear that route was borderline just SoL/CGDCT with bits of shonen battles here and there. That was it. UBW was this but with more exploration of the setting and the side characters. Heaven's Feel was a full-blown story all around. Nothing felt pointless or insignificant. You can tell Nasu wrote it last, he'd improved as a writer by the time he was done with the first two routes.
